He emphasized the critical role of connectivity in enabling autonomous driving and cited GM’s 2021 launch of OnStar, its connectivity and safety platform, in the U.A.E. Frakes noted GM's ongoing efforts to integrate AI technologies across its Cadillac, GMC, and Chevrolet brands to enhance safety and personalization in driving experiences.
He also underscored the importance of regulatory frameworks that can keep pace with innovation, highlighting the U.A.E.’s leadership in adopting advanced mobility solutions. Frakes shared that GM plans to introduce its hands-free driver assistance feature, Super Cruise, to the region and is actively seeking industry input on cross-border data flows and privacy standards.
The visit included a broader discussion with U.S. and U.A.E. stakeholders on opportunities and challenges in scaling advanced mobility technologies. Key topics included infrastructure readiness, consumer and policymaker confidence, and the need for agile, modern regulatory approaches. Frakes also spoke to GM’s global strategy to secure critical materials—such as microchips—through reshoring initiatives, drawing lessons from pandemic-related supply chain disruptions.
